Definition and process principle of thread rolling

Thread rolling, also known as thread forming, is a machining process that achieves thread formation through plastic deformation. It is typically performed in a cold state and belongs to the category of multi-functional cold extrusion processing. Its core principle is to use a rolling die with a specific tooth profile to apply pressure to a rotating workpiece blank, causing the material to flow plastically and transferring the die's contour shape to the workpiece surface to form threads or other textures.

 

This process effectively improves the internal and surface quality of the workpiece, achieving a surface roughness of Ry 0.1-0.8 μm after machining. The radial compressive stress and work hardening effect generated during processing significantly improve the workpiece's fatigue strength, torsional strength, and wear resistance. Compared to traditional cutting processes, thread rolling offers advantages such as high material utilization, high production efficiency, and energy saving.
